I’m not sure what to say about this book. I read lots of reviews online before ordering. It was definitely a page turner. I finished it in three days. This is one of those books where you cringe at all of the characters for their stupidity and their questionable morality. With that being said, I found it fascinating and enthralling. I would say this is a murder mystery, but that would just be putting it in a neat digestible box. Which it isn’t!! Cobb like many writers of the last century has chosen to write about protagonists obsessing and partaking in sex that is deemed by society as inappropriate and amoral. What gets me about this book is it is written by a woman who threw out most of the stereotypical depictions of women in our society. It’s like Cobb just wanted to say, “See women can be just as horrible as men.” This book is very well written and I feel like I know this small town in Texas. I definitely recommend this book based on the fact that I had a hard time putting it down even though I wanted to kill Sophie myself. Pre-ordered, what a mistake. Dark, but not clever. Sexy, but you want to take a boiling shower after. Characters main and supporting are shallow caricatures. Protagonist seldom actually speaks to people in her life and the way she moves through the world is disjointed, perhaps because everyone is drunk the first 70% of story. At least the portrayal of TX is credible.
